The aim of the project is to develop microbes and anaerobic microbial processes applying marine microalgae feedstock for production of health promoting bioactive ingredients in feed.

Special emphasis is on seaweed derived feed products enriched in protein, organic acids, prebiotic oligosaccharides and phenolic compounds that in conjunction with probiotic microbes have beneficial influence on gut health (synbiotics).

Different types of whole seaweed will be processed and different types of fermenting bacteria tested. Fermenting seaweed will increase digestibility, and facilitate access to bioactive ingredients.

Thereby, the bioactive properties and health promoting effects will be enhanced.
