The IDF Group at Intellectual Ventures Begins New Collaboration with Matís, a Leading Global Food Research Company

The Invention Development Fund (IDF), part of the Intellectual Ventures family of investment funds, today announced a new collaboration with Matis, a leading food research, biotechnology and marine biology company based in Reykjavik, Iceland. The collaboration will see the Matis team of researchers contributing to IDF’s global invention network as inventors, working specifically on various corporate-sponsored Open Innovation projects related to food, enzymes and biotechnology, aquaculture, agriculture, and other areas.

“Our customers come to us for assistance in finding high quality technology solutions. IDF’s Open Innovation platform allows us to work with the best inventors no matter where they may be based,” said David Kraft, Director, Sponsored Invention Services, IDF. “By launching this new collaboration with Matis, we now extend not only our geographic base of inventors to Iceland, but bring one of the world’s premier research institutes into our network. We have already started collaborating on new inventions with Matis and the initial results have been very impressive.”

IDF presents technical challenges to inventors as Requests for Invention (RFI). Matis will collaborate with IDF on several food, packaging, and agriculture related RFIs. Over time, Matis will gain access to the entire pipeline of RFIs that flow through IDF. To date, IDF has launched nearly 200 RFIs in a wide variety of technical areas ranging from virtual realty, and containment of super-critical gases, to the search for new kinds of snack foods.

“We are happy to be working with the IDF group at Intellectual Ventures as a strategic collaborator to help spearhead their expanding work in food, agriculture, and biotechnology,” said Dr. Hordur G. Kristinsson, Chief Science Officer at Matis. “We have already begun work on a number of specific RFIs, and the experience has been intellectually exciting. We look forward to the ongoing collaboration and to seeing our ideas and inventions commercialized in companies around the world through the work of IDF.”
