Matís Awarded Funding to Investigate Value Added Streams from Mass Cultivated Seaweed

Matís has joined forces with BIC (Bio-Based Industries Consortium (BIC)) in advancing our bioeconomy and leveraging efforts in biomass innovations, biorefinery developments, and environmental sustainability.

The total amount of funding awarded for the “MACRO CASCADE” by BBI JU (Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking) is €4,156,356 with a Matís contribution of €377,223. Matís will contribute expertise in enzymatic biomass processing as well as biomolecular and bioactive analysis.

BIC is an integral contributor to the BBI JU, serving as a private representative in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The European framework program for research and technological development, Horizon 2020, serves as the public contributor in the PPP of the BBI JU. The EU and BIC will contribute €975 million and €2,7 billion, respectively, towards bio-based industrial innovations from 2014-2020.

The project titled, “Macro Cascade: Cascading Marine Macroalgal Biorefinery” addresses the BBI proposal call, “BBI VC3.R9 – Valorization of aquatic biomass.” The project will focus on underutilized marine biomass in the form of macroalgae. Sustainable, mass cultivation of seaweed is under exploited in the EU and directed efforts in finding value added streams can lead to final products such as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. The waste products could then be directed to fertilizer and biofuels. The project sets out to establish and evaluate macroalgal biorefining on a lab, pilot, and conceptual scale for feasibility, bioeconomy impact, and 100% utilization of biomass (see Figure 1).

The principal investigator on behalf of Matís is Professor Gudmundur Óli Hreggvidsson, Ph.D. Over a period of 48 months, Matís will be working with other bio-based consortium and industry members including and not limited to Danish Technologic Institute (DTI), Cargill, Ocean Rainforest (ORF) in the Faroe Islands, Novozymes, Energy Research Centre (ECN) in the Netherlands, and the Danish Technological University (DTU). Matís looks forward to this new project, applying innovation and research for the development of technologies that better our global bioeconomy.
